Carl Catron

Carl Catron is a São Paulo-based, freelance saxophonist. Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Carl began his career in music as a pianist at 7 years old, though admittedly he did not love being “stuck in one place” at the piano. Carl discovered his love for the saxophone at age 11, thanks to a chance encounter with world-renowned saxophonist Kirk Whalum. Ever since, Carl has dedicated his life to the study of the saxophone and the craft of musicianship. Carl fell in love with the freedom of it all and one’s ability to connect with his audience. Carl is proficient in alto and baritone saxophones, while his focus and mastery lies with the tenor saxophone.

Carl attended Berklee College of Music in Boston from Fall 2007 to Spring 2011, all the while honing his craft and developing new skills. His time there was fruitful indeed. Though the exact day/date remains unknown, in the fall of 2007, Carl was hit with a spark of intuitiveness. Immediately, Carl began pursuing Rock Saxophone.

Trying to invoke the freedom and power of Rock & Roll into his daily life, as a saxophonist, Carl began listening to Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Liquid Tension Experiment. Copping licks of the masters themselves, while incorporating their speed and dexterity into his own playing. Between these artists’ influence and that of John Coltrane, Michael Brecker, and Grover Washington, Carl has developed into the fluid and fast player that he is today.

Carl later went on to form his first band/project, Authentic Counterfeit (2007-2012). It was a group with the goal in mind of putting out good music for the masses. Carl had and still has a strong love for a lot of Pop and R&B hits and wanted to present these to the public in unique ways by incorporating rock and/or jazz elements into covers. Authentic Counterfeit's crowning achievement was their tour in Torino, Italy, in the summer of 2012.

Always trying to get to “that next level”, Carl still constantly commits himself to training, practice, study, and performance. His goal is to find his place out there amongst the greats that he reveres, while discovering the extent of his own abilities, through playing with as many musicians and performers as he can find. By broadening his horizons, Carl hopes to expand his understanding of the saxophone, music, and himself.
